It’s that time of year again – Time to Blog for Choice.
This years question is:
Given the anti-choice gains in the states and Congress, are you concerned about choice in 2011?
I think if I was older than I would be more scared. During my lifetime there has always been choice. It’s hard for me to imagine that choice being taken away. I can however picture more hoops and more red tape.
This is how I see the issue, be it over stereotyped:
Conservatives say that liberals want abortion to be legal, but we want the death penalty to be illegal (it’s fine to kill babies, but not murders)
Liberals say that conservatives want abortion to be illegal, but they want the death penalty and are fine with are young people going to war. (You can’t kill babies before they are born, but once they’re 17 go right ahead)
Now that might not be fair, but that’s how I see it. If you were to ask any of theses conservative politicians which s/he would rather lose – her/his 17 year-old child or a fetus? I bet the fetus would be picked every time. Or would you lose a fetus to save your wife? People don’t think about things until it happens to them.
It’s just so sad that we vilianize women. I know people who think that there are women out there who have abortions just for the fun of it. It makes me mad.
It’s like you’re damned if do, damned if you don’t.
- You can’t teach kids about sex because they might have it
- So kids, not knowing about how sex works, get pregnant
- If she keeps the baby, she’s a bad mother
- If she has an abortion, she’s evil.
Minnesota scored a C+ grade for choice. That’s the highest of the states that touch us, but it still sucks. No wonder when in August of last year, our thankfully now gone governor rejected a $850,000 grant for sex ed. I hope the fucker doesn’t try to run for president.
Abstinence is not the answer. Leaving our children ignorant is not the answer. Having this be a political issue at all is not the answer.
When I think of a world without woman’s right to choose, I think of “The Handmaid’s Tale“. That book scared the shit out of me. I hope in this case life does not imitate art.
I wish I could say that at some point we’d come closer together on this issues. I looked to see if US citizens can have abortions in Canada. I was unable to find out one way or another.
I hate feeling powerless. I hope the people in power think before they act.
